Laos is the poorest country in Southeast Asia and Laos is the poorest country in Southeast Asia and far less developed then its neighboring countries. We absolutely love traveling in places like this! If you avoid the main roads, you’ll find yourself on endless dirt tracks, surrounded by jaw dropping sceneries and the odd small village which is often nothing more than a cluster of wooden huts. We remember the smiling faces of the locals and the kids enthusiastically waving at us as we pass by. The road following the border between Thailand and The road following the border between Thailand and Myanmar was actually a pretty nice ride, despite the smoke season having kicked in. We couldn’t really enjoy the scenery to the fullest because of the thick clouds of smog from the burning rice fields. We were so close to Myanmar and Tom’s hand even crossed the border, through the fence. But Myanmar will remain a no go for now as getting your bike across the border still isn’t allowed from northern Thailand. I admit, some parts of the track heading north wer I admit, some parts of the track heading north were just too hard for me. Rather than riding and laying the bike on its side, I climbed my way up the most challenging stretches on foot with Tom fetching my bike and maneuvering it up or down the hill. From Chiang Mai it was only a short ride to Chiang From Chiang Mai it was only a short ride to Chiang Rai, home of the famous white and blue temples. After two days of visiting the area and eating delicious food on the night market, it was time to move on. With the abundance of tracks heading north, we decided to follow a rough direction. But boy, did we suffer! What started as a nice wide gravel road, soon became a sketchy single track forest path going steep uphill and downhill. What was supposed to be a 2 hour ride, turned out to be a day and a half of sweating, swearing and complete exhaustion. We ended up spending the night with a hill tribe in a remote ‘village’, sleeping on the balcony above the only shop around. The Mae Hong Son loop northwest of Pai is one of t The Mae Hong Son loop northwest of Pai is one of the must do’s in Thailand. Although the mountains were covered in a haze due to the smoky season (the locals burn the rice fields to prepare them for the next season), we enjoyed the ride along the tourist viewpoints. But as usual, there was the lure of the dirt track. We randomly chose a long series of dotted grey lines on the GPS to take us from Mae Hong Son back to Chiang Mai: endless gravel roads, fantastic views and not a living soul around. We spent a few days in Pai, a true hotspot for lai We spent a few days in Pai, a true hotspot for laid back hippie tourists, young backpackers and digital nomads. There’s nothing really typically Thai about Pai, which basically consists of hostels, restaurants, bars and weed shops. But it has this unique appealing vibe many travelers cannot resist. We were so excited to meet new people again, to have our morning coffee chatting with yet another one of these dreamy personalities who just had their morning yoga, ready for an exciting day of chilling, practicing circus skills or playing music. An endless series of curves and hairpins on the tw An endless series of curves and hairpins on the twisty mountain roads in the north of Thailand, took us from Hang Dong to Pai. It turned out to be the perfect test for my healing leg muscle. I passed it with flying colors! After six weeks off the bike, I was so excited to finally feel that adrenaline rush again.
